Morocco, represented by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, took part in the proceedings of “GLOBSEC 2026,” one of the leading international forums on security, geopolitics, energy, and international finance, held May 21 – 23 in the Czech capital, Prague.
This participation, which comes at a time of profound and complex global transformations, provided an opportunity for the minister to present Morocco’s energy strategy, which is based on the development of renewable energy, with the aim of exceeding the target of 52% of installed electricity capacity by 2030, as well as promoting electricity self-generation and energy efficiency.
The Kingdom’s strategic vision also relies on strengthening regional integration through the development of international partnerships that enhance energy security and contribute to the responsible management of maritime straits in full respect of international law, the minister stressed.
Benali also highlighted the strategic importance of Morocco’s mining sector, particularly given the growing global importance of critical minerals, noting that the Kingdom possesses significant mining potential that remains insufficiently explored.
In this regard, she pointed out that demand for these minerals is expected to increase considerably, not only because of the energy transition but also due to the digital transition, which is one of the largest consumers of strategic minerals and metals, ranging from electronic chips and data centers to the development of artificial intelligence.
Benali also recalled Morocco’s leadership in the phosphate sector, noting that the Kingdom holds 70% of the world’s phosphate reserves. She added that OCP Group has become a leading global player, serving not only global food security but also decarbonization efforts and the supply of strategic minerals essential for clean energy technologies.
Addressing the issue of security in relation to the management of maritime straits, the official highlighted the Moroccan-Spanish model for managing the Strait of Gibraltar, which reflects an approach based on cooperation, freedom of navigation, and strict respect for international law.
Benali also pointed out the transformative power of the Atlantic Africa Initiative launched by King Mohammed VI, noting that it goes beyond the framework of a gas project to constitute a strategic corridor capable of offering a natural solution for Europe.
Today, Morocco stands as a model of a country that, regardless of its size or wealth, represents a genuine actor and reliable partner, effectively contributing to global security on the basis of partnership, trust, and respect for international law, she said.
On the sidelines of her participation in “GLOBSEC 2026,” the official held talks with Czech Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlíček on ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation and open new prospects for partnership in the fields of energy, industry, and investment.
