Morocco has emerged as one of the safest countries in the world in the newly released Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2026, achieving a zero terrorism score, according to the latest findings from the Institute for Economics and Peace.
The report, published this month, shows that Morocco recorded no terrorist incidents, deaths, or injuries in 2025, underscoring the country’s long‑standing stability despite its geographic closeness to instable areas such as Algeria and the increasingly volatile Sahel region.
While Morocco remained unaffected by terrorist activity, nearly 70% of global terrorism‑related deaths in 2025 were concentrated in just five countries: Pakistan, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
At the same time, the Middle East and North Africa witnessed a sharp decline in terrorism, with attacks falling by more than half and deaths dropping by over 80% compared to the previous year, the report showed.
Morocco and Mauritania were the only North African states with a terrorism score of zero, placing them in the “no impact” category, GTI mentioned.
The report cites Morocco’s intelligence coordination, religious sector oversight, deradicalization programs such as the Musalaha initiative, and strong cross‑border cooperation as key factors in fending off the terrorist threat.
The 2026 GTI further reports that global terrorism continued its downward trend, with deaths falling to 5,582, the lowest level since 2007.
