Mauritania and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) have signed two financing agreements worth €116.6 million to strengthen the country’s health and energy sectors.
The agreements were signed in Jeddah by Mauritania’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Abdallah Ould Souleymane Ould Cheikh Sidia, and IsDB Vice-President for Operations, Rami Ahmed, in the presence of senior Mauritanian officials, including the governor of the Central bank.
The first agreement, valued at €61.4 million, will finance the construction and equipping of an integrated referral hospital in Nouakchott focused on maternal, newborn and child health, with the aim of reducing maternal and infant mortality.
The second deal, worth €55.2 million, will support the interconnection of the electricity grid between Mauritania and Mali, including the installation of grid-connected solar power plants to enhance renewable energy supply and regional integration.
Mauritanian officials said the agreements reflect the long-standing partnership between the country and the IsDB, which dates back to Mauritania’s accession as a founding member in 1974, and align with national plans to accelerate development and improve essential public services.
