Moroccan report highlights steady growth, persistent fragilities in small businesses

The Moroccan Observatory of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (OMTPME) presented its 2025 Annual Report offering a comprehensive overview of Morocco’s corporate business landscape in 2024, revealing a combination of sustained growth and ongoing structural vulnerabilities.

According to the report, unveiled during a press conference in Casablanca led by its executive director, Amal Idrissi, Morocco counted 380,230 corporate enterprises in 2024, a modest increase of 1.3 percent compared to the previous year.

The national entrepreneurial fabric remains overwhelmingly dominated by small-scale structures, with the vast majority generating less than 10 million dirhams annually. Medium-sized firms represent only a small share of the total, while large enterprises account for an even smaller fraction.

Nearly two-thirds of all active enterprises are concentrated in the corridor stretching from Tanger to El Jadida , underscoring its role as the country’s economic engine.

However, this dominance also exposes significant regional disparities, raising questions about the distribution of economic opportunities across the rest of the country.

Sectorally, commerce remains the leading activity in most regions, representing more than a quarter of all enterprises. Construction follows closely, while specialized, scientific and technical services make up a smaller but growing segment of the economy. Despite its strategic importance, the manufacturing sector represents only 6.4 percent of total enterprises.

The SARL remains the most common legal form among Moroccan businesses. The SARL AU continues to gain traction, expanding by 6.4 percent as entrepreneurs increasingly favor more flexible structures.

Business creation remained dynamic in 2024, with nearly 96,000 new enterprises launched nationwide. Corporate entities accounted for 68,000 of these, reflecting a 5.5 percent rise and offsetting the decline of individual business registrations. Most newly created firms are very small, with almost all generating revenues below one million dirhams.
