Morocco’s national ports operator among “Big Four” in Africa

“Marsa Maroc group” is the 4th largest container port terminal operator in Africa, according to “Global Container Terminal Operators” report 2024 issued by British Drewry maritime research consultancy.

The Moroccan group has been recognized among the “Big Four” in Africa for the second consecutive time thanks to its sustained performance amid regional competition, confirming the Kingdom’s key role in global logistic industry.

Drewry’s report commends “Marsa Maroc” operational efficiency, investment in infrastructure, and market share in transshipment and maritime traffic.

Marsa Maroc operates 24 terminals nationwide and employs over 2,200 staff. It holds a 30-year concession for Container Terminal 4 (CT4) at Tanger Med, one of Africa’s busiest ports, and recently expanded at Casablanca with modernized facilities for 600,000 TEUs annually.

In 2024, the Moroccan group, which focuses on container handling, processed a total 2.9 million TEUs, a performance which enabled Marsa Maroc to maintain its 4th place in Africa dominated by DP World (operating in South Africa & Senegal), APM Terminals (serving in Nigeria and Egypt), and ICTSI (active in Madagascar and elsewhere).

To bolster its continental presence, Marsa Maroc signed agreements in 2024 to operate Terminals 1, 5, and 6 at Benin’s Port of Cotonou, adding multipurpose and container handling capacity. It also invested in Damerjog Oil FZE for an oil-and-gas port project in Djibouti.

The Moroccan company is set to commission two new container terminals at Nador West Med (Eastern and Western), with a combined capacity exceeding 5 million TEUs dedicated to transshipment. The Eastern Terminal alone (1,520 meters of quay, 18m depth) will require a €200 million investment and is slated for 2027 operations, potentially elevating Marsa Maroc’s total container capacity to 6.5 million TEUs.

According to Drewry report, Marsa Maroc is becoming a key player in Africa’s maritime logistic corridors, particularly along the Mediterranean and West African routes, consolidating the Kingdom’s growing role as a regional transshipment hub.
