Comoros President Azali Assoumani reiterated his country’s “unfailing” support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.
UN Security Council Resolution 2797 backing autonomy plan for the Sahara under Morocco’s sovereignty was a “shared victory” between Rabat and Moroni, President Assoumani told le360 on the sidelines of the MEDays forum in Tangiers.
“We are proud to have been among the first to support Morocco in effectively regaining its sovereignty over the Sahara,” said the Comorian head of state, recalling that his country was the first to open a consulate in Laâyoune, in a strong gesture of solidarity with the Kingdom.
Azali Assoumani praised King Mohammed VI’s efforts to build international consensus around the Moroccan solution, stressing that “Morocco’s emergence and its role in Africa require lasting peace to contribute to the continent’s development.”
According to him, Morocco’s stability goes beyond national borders and is a key driver for Africa’s future.
Asked about climate challenges, the Comorian president voiced concern over the direct impact of climate change on his country: rising sea levels, mountain collapses, and growing vulnerability of the archipelago.
“We must adapt to the transition, because we cannot stop the sea from rising,” he said, urging the world to “turn the page on fossil fuels” and embrace a global awareness.
Azali Assoumani also highlighted the depth of ties between the two nations, stating he is “a product of Morocco” in reference to his studies in the Kingdom.
Many Comorian leaders were educated in Morocco, a legacy that explains the strength and longevity of bilateral relations, he said.
“We are proud of this cooperation, which continues and must benefit both our countries and peoples,” he added.
