The Moroccan national under-20 football team has achieved a historic and unprecedented feat by winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup held in Chile, in an epic and tense tournament. Morocco’s first-ever U20 World Cup title was won after an exciting victory over Argentina, with 2 goals to null, in the final held on Sunday at the Julio Martínez Prádanos National Stadium in Santiago.
The Atlas Cubs delivered a commanding performance that captivated fans throughout the tournament and crowned a remarkable run with a flawless final.
Morocco took control early in the final match, opening the score in the 15th minute through Zabiri’s sublime free kick, a curling shot that left the Argentine goalkeeper motionless after being fouled moments earlier at the edge of the box.
Zabiri struck again in the 28th minute with a spectacular volley, doubling Morocco’s lead and deepening Argentina’s frustration.
Despite several offensive attempts, the South Americans were consistently thwarted by Morocco’s disciplined defense and organized double block, forcing them to rely on ineffective wing play. Goalkeeper Gomis sealed his side’s dominance with a decisive save in the 83rd minute to deny Silvetti.
The Atlas Cubs, coached by Mohamed Ouahbi, maintained tactical discipline and compact defensive lines throughout the match, frustrating Argentina’s attacks and holding on to their two-goal advantage until the final whistle.
The match was followed by the Atlas Cubs’ supporters who flocked to Santiago, crossing the Atlantic from Casablanca, or flewing from Washington, Mexico City, Brasília, and Buenos Aires.
Morocco’s historic win follows a strong record in the tournament, with victories over Spain, Brazil, South Korea, the United States, and France. The result caps a golden year for Moroccan football, reinforcing the country’s growing presence in international competitions.
