Morocco, third place among EU watermelon suppliers

Morocco has consolidated its position as a key player in the European watermelon market, becoming the third-largest supplier to the European Union during the 2024/2025 campaign.

Between August 2024 and July 2025, Morocco exported 158,860 tons of watermelons to EU member states, accounting for 9.6% of total EU imports, according to trade data from Euroestacom (Icex-Eurostat).

These exports generated €177.44 million in revenue, with an average price of €1.12 per kilogram, the highest among major suppliers.

Over the past decade, Moroccan watermelon exports to the EU have increased by 118%, contrasting with declining volumes from traditional leaders such as Spain (-18.2%), Italy (-6.1%), and Greece (-14.9%).

Spain remains the EU’s top supplier, exporting 483,620 tons in 2024/2025 (29.2% of the total), followed by Italy with 184,940 tons (11.2%). Morocco ranks third, ahead of Germany (120,500 tons) and the Netherlands (118,430 tons), whose figures largely reflect re-export operations.

In total, the EU imported 1.65 million tons of watermelons during the 2024/2025 season, valued at €1.3 billion, with an average import price of €0.79/kg.

Morocco’s competitive edge lies in both volume growth and price performance. The average price of Moroccan watermelons exceeded that of Spanish (€0.84/kg) and Italian (€0.64/kg) products by 33% and 75%, respectively. This trend reflects a strategic shift toward higher-quality production, supported by favorable climatic and logistical conditions, as well as weakening performance from Spain.

If current dynamics persist, Morocco is expected to maintain its position as the EU’s third-largest supplier and could challenge Italy for second place in the coming years.
