Morocco issues expression of interest for floating LNG terminal in Nador port

The Moroccan energy ministry has issued an expression of interest for its liquified natural gas terminal in Nador’s port, an infrastructure that fits the country’s energy diversification policy, energy minister said.

This announcement marks the first step in a tender for the project that will help power electricity production plants and industrial zones in Mohammedia and Kenitra, energy minister Leila Benali told a conference in Ouarzazate.

The terminal will be connected to a future pipeline that will stretch further south to Dakhla and then to the African-Atlantic pipeline that will link Morocco to Nigeria benefiting 13 West African countries.

Gas, a transition energy with less carbon emission compared to fossil fuel, represents a tiny fraction of Morocco’s electricity production, dominated by coal.

The country has increased its installed capacity to 12GW including 5.5 GW from renewable energy or 45% of the total mix, putting it ahead of schedule to hit the target of 52% before 2030.
