Sudanese army reclaim vital khartoum installations in strategic offensive

Sudan’s military has strengthened its control over Khartoum, capturing additional government facilities just one day after reclaiming the symbolic Republican Palace from paramilitary forces.

Military spokesperson Brigadier General Nabil Abdullah confirmed Saturday that government troops had successfully dislodged the Rapid Support Forces from the National Intelligence Service headquarters and Corinthia Hotel in central Khartoum. The operation extended to securing the Central Bank of Sudan and various governmental and educational institutions across the capital region.

The military offensive reportedly resulted in substantial RSF casualties, with Abdullah stating that hundreds of paramilitary fighters were killed while attempting to evacuate the area. The RSF issued no immediate response to these claims.

Friday’s recapture of the Republican Palace represented a pivotal symbolic triumph for the Sudanese military after nearly two years of conflict. The operation was overshadowed by a drone strike on the palace, allegedly conducted by RSF forces, which claimed the lives of two journalists and a driver from Sudanese state television, along with Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Ibrahim from the military’s media division.

Former UN envoy Volker Perthes characterized the developments as a decisive military and political victory, predicting RSF fighters would retreat to their Darfur stronghold. However, he cautioned that the conflict would likely transform into a protracted insurgency resembling the early 2000s regional conflicts.

The latest military advances follow months of gradual territorial gains across Khartoum and other urban centers. Meanwhile, humanitarian concerns intensify as pro-democracy groups report at least 45 civilian fatalities during recent RSF operations in the Darfur city of al-Maliha.
