Peruvian congress urges government support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative
With a landslide majority vote, the Peruvian government passed a motion urging the country’s government to back Morocco’s autonomy initiative, which has gathered momentum in recent years rallying global powers as well as African and Arab support.
The motion urged the Peruvian foreign ministry to act globally in favor of this initiative to find a lasting solution to the Sahara conflict.
The conflict has blocked development and integration of the peoples of the Maghreb, the motion notes, calling on the parties to the conflict to engage in the round-tables process with good faith under the aegis of the UN.
The motion recalls that Morocco’s autonomy initiative has been described by the UN Security Council and an increasing number of influential countries as “serious and credible”.
So far, the autonomy initiative has the support of 120 countries, including France, the US, Spain, Israel, most of the Arab world, majority of African countries as well as Latin American nations such as Chile.
