Sea-Watch Charity calls for swift rescue of over 30 migrants stranded on oil rig off Tunisia

Sea-Watch Charity has launched an urgent call for swift rescue of over 30 migrants, including two children, who have been stranded on an oil rig off Tunisia.

As reported by Reuters, the migrants have been stranded for three days and are facing severe conditions.

The group was spotted on the Miskar oil platform last Saturday by a reconnaissance plane, with an empty rubber dinghy floating nearby. The migrants were found huddling in blankets on the platform’s deck, attempting to shield themselves from the cold and rough seas, Reuters said.

Alarm Phone, a charity providing a helpline for sea migrants, reported that they had contacted the group on Sunday. During the conversation, it was revealed that one person had died and several others were in poor health. “They’ve not eaten for days,” Alarm Phone reported, highlighting the dire situation faced by the stranded individuals.

Sea-Watch, which identified the migrants as having fled from Libya, called on European authorities to act swiftly and organize a rescue operation. Despite agreements between European governments and Tunisia to intercept and return sea migrants, human rights groups have condemned these deals, as many migrants continue to face life-threatening situations at sea.
