Morocco has pleaded for a just solution to the Palestinian issue, as it is a sine qua non condition to a lasting peace in the Middle East. given the centrality of this cause for Arab peoples.
The plea was made by Deputy Speaker of the upper house of the Moroccan Parliament Ahmed Akhchichine at the 7th Conference of Arab Parliaments and Speakers of Arab Councils and Parliaments held in Cairo on Saturday.
“The difficult and complex circumstances facing the Palestinian question following the Israeli aggression against Gaza reinforce our determination to work towards a just solution to this cause, as it remains the sine qua non for the establishment of lasting peace in the Middle East,” Akhchichine said.
During the conference, held co-organized by the Arab Parliament and the Arab Parliamentary Union, the head of the Moroccan delegation called for full respect for the ceasefire in Gaza and the implementation of all its phases, which would bring an end to the war, release all Palestinian prisoners and pave the way for the return of displaced persons, in addition to allowing the entry of humanitarian aid and relief supplies into Gaza.
He reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, to further efforts to preserve the legal, historical, and civilizational status of the Holy City. The Kingdom is working through the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency, the executive arm of the Al-Quds Committee, to carry out humanitarian and social projects aimed at preserving the Holy City’s civilizational identity, maintaining its status as a symbol of tolerance and coexistence between the different monotheistic religions, and providing assistance to strengthen the resilience of Al-Quds inhabitants and improve their social and living conditions, he recalled.
Furthermore, the head of the Moroccan delegation noted that, based on its belief in the importance of cooperation between Arab countries, Morocco has adopted an approach based on the activation of various cooperation mechanisms in favor of common interests, and to deepen political consultations between Morocco and Arab countries in order to examine various bilateral and multilateral issues of common interest.
In this respect, he noted that the League of Arab States and all the institutions and bodies affiliated to it, headed by the Arab Parliament, constitute the institutional and legitimate framework for coordinating efforts and unifying positions with regard to the causes of the Arab nation.
The 7th Conference of Arab Parliaments and Speakers of Arab Councils and Parliaments is a major milestone in the process of joint Arab parliamentary action, he said, stressing the need for collective adherence and mobilization to defend the causes of the Arab Ummah, preserve the region’s security and stability, its unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty, and reject any external interference in the region’s internal affairs.
Taking the floor, Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Abou El Gheït called for a unified Arab parliamentary position to support the resistance of the Palestinian people and their just cause in all regional and international parliamentary events.
“The Arab League remains committed to the two-state solution, the only path to comprehensive peace in the region and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 1967 borders with East Al-Quds as its capital,” he said.
The conference adopted a document dubbed the “Arab Parliamentary Vision for Achieving and Strengthening Peaceful Coexistence”.
The document outlines the Arab parliamentary action plan, which includes a road-map of 15 points outlining the steps and actions to be taken by Arab parliamentarians in the near future to support the steadfastness of the Palestinian people on their land, rejecting any plans for displacement, annexation, or the liquidation of the Palestinian cause.
Under the action plan, the Inter-Parliamentary Union and regional parliaments are requested to form parliamentary committees to visit the Gaza Strip to examine Israeli war crimes committed against Palestinian civilians, in addition to an endeavor for the upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting to issue an international parliamentary resolution rejecting all displacement plans and attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause.
Moreover, the Arab parliamentary action plan calls for intensifying communication with the parliaments of countries that have suspended funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and countries that recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel or moved their embassies there, to urge them to reverse these decisions.
The document will be submitted to the Extraordinary Summit of the Arab League scheduled for next month in Egypt, President of the Arab Parliament Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi announced.
