Iraq reiterates steady support to Morocco’s territorial integrity, lauds King’s firm defense of Palestinian cause
Iraq reiterated, on Saturday, its constant position in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity, and praised the international momentum in favor of the autonomy plan for the resolution of the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
This stance was expressed in a joint statement released following talks in Rabat between Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
The Iraqi foreign minister commended Morocco’s efforts to reach a realistic political solution based on consensus, in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, the joint statement said.
Iraq also lauded the sustained efforts exerted by King Mohammed VI, Chairman of Al-Quds Committee, in Support of the Palestinian Cause and his consistent efforts in defending the city of Al-Quds Asharif and preserving its cultural identity and its status as a symbol of tolerance and coexistence between religions.
Iraq’s top diplomat welcomed the King’s support for the resistance of the Al-Quds population, through humanitarian and social projects carried out by Bayt Mal Al-Quds Asharif Agency, the executive arm of the Al-Quds Committee.
During their talks, both officials reaffirmed the two countries’ determination to give a new impetus to bilateral ties and expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum witnessed in bilateral relations, which are poised to be enhanced further. They underscored their shared desire to deepen cooperation in various areas, including the exchange of Morocco’s expertise with Iraq, namely in the economic sphere, and the promotion of investment.
This renewed momentum was highlighted by the reopening of the Moroccan Embassy in Baghdad on January 28, 2023, after an 18- year closure, marking Morocco’s firm will to strengthen ties with Iraq in all areas.
As part of such positive impetus in bilateral relations, the two ministers agreed to hold the first round of political consultations as soon as possible, with a view to convening the Morocco-Iraq joint commission.
The meeting highlighted by the signing of a memorandum of understanding on mutual exemption from visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports.
On Arab and regional issues, Bourita and Hussein stressed the importance of continued consultation and coordination between Morocco and Iraq on various Arab, regional, and international issues of common interest, with the Palestinian cause at the forefront. They also reiterated their consistent support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, particularly the establishment of an independent State, based on the June 1967 borders, with East Al-Quds as its capital.
Regarding Syria, discussions highlighted a convergence of views on the country’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty, as well as on the unity of the Syrian people encompassing all its components and groups.
In this vein, the two ministers expressed their wish for peace, stability, and prosperity to prevail in this brotherly country, within the framework of national unity that includes all Syrians without exclusion.
Furthermore, they underscored their determination to continue coordinating their positions within regional and international organizations, including the United Nations, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Fuad Hussein is paying an official visit to Morocco this February 5 to 9. It is his first trip to the Kingdom since he assumed office as Iraq’s foreign minister.
