Family code reform: Morocco confirms its “leader” role in Muslim world (Foreign Policy Center)
The ongoing reform of the Moroccan family code confirms the Kingdom’s role as a “leader” in the Muslim world in terms of equal rights and adapting to the country’s social, economic and cultural developments, said vice-president of the American Foreign Policy Council, Ilan Berman.
“Morocco has long been a leader in the Muslim world, in terms of modernizing its social contract and providing an expansive interpretation of the rights of its citizens,” Berman told MAP.
This is part of a long process to reform the Family code and reinforce equality between men and women, while falling in line with the Constitution and with Morocco’s international commitments, the expert added.
“What is notable, and deeply significant, is the degree to which Morocco’s latest reform efforts are intended to reflect the totality of society,” Berman underlined.
He also hailed the participative approach which was adopted in such a way to reflect the expectations of all society components.
