UN: Morocco Warns against Nexus between Separatism & Terrorism
Morocco has sounded the alarm on the nexus between separatism and terrorism, making reference to the Algeria-backed Polisario armed militia which has ties with terrorist groups threatening regional peace and stability.
Speaking during a debate held at UN Security Council this week, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to UN Omar Hilale warned against the alliance between separatist groups and terrorist organizations, such as Al-Qaeda and Daesh in Africa.
This axis of evil exploits the vulnerabilities of African communities, fuels divisions and takes advantage of their instability to undermine the territorial integrity of African countries, said the diplomat, urging the international community to counter these terrorist groups, threatening peace, security and the rule of law.
He availed this opportunity to highlight the royal strategy deployed to help African countries counter the scourge of terrorism. The Moroccan strategy is based on four fundamental pillars: strengthening security, enhancing economic & human development, preserving religious identity and promoting regional & international cooperation.
Mr. Hilale said the Moroccan strategy promotes a moderate Islam, based on the universal values of coexistence and peace, citing in this regard the contributions of Mohammed VI Foundation for African Ulema and the Mohammed VI Institute for the Training of Imams, Morchidines and Morchidates, in countering extremism and fanaticism.
Since its creation in 2015, the Mohammed VI Institute for the Training of Imams, Morchidines and Morchidates has trained more than 3,000 beneficiaries from various African countries. One hundred imams from Mali graduated this January from this institute seeking to ward off the threat of radicalization and bring in stability to Sahel countries.
