Spain highly appreciates Moroccan King’s efforts to promote regional stability – Spanish PM
Spain highly appreciates King Mohammed VI’s efforts to promote progress in Morocco and champion regional stability, President of the Spanish Government said.
Pedro Sanchez, speaking to the media on the sidelines of the International Socialist Congress, held on Saturday in Rabat, welcomed the excellent ties between Morocco and Spain, “two brotherly neighboring countries who share projects and a similar vision on the multilateral issues and challenges that the world and our society are facing.”
The Spanish Prime Minister, who is also the head of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), stated further that “cooperation and the bonds of friendship between Morocco and Spain are essential for addressing many demands in an effective and fair manner.” The two countries share projects and ambitions, he said.
“It is an honor for me to be here, not only as the Prime Minister of Spain but also to co-chair a meeting of the Socialist International Council with our Moroccan socialist brothers” from L’Union Socialiste des Forces Populaires (USFP).
For the first time in Rabat, the Socialist International brought together the Africa Committee of the IS, the Socialist International Women, and the Socialist International Council. Nearly 200 prominent figures from more than 60 countries gathered to discuss issues such as sustainable development, democracy, climate change, and social justice.
The Spanish PM emphasized that “it is essential to develop strategies together that transcend our borders and strengthen cooperation between governments and political parties. This is particularly important for internationalist causes,” explained the President of the Socialist International, who will remain at the head of the organization until at least the next congress.
He also mentioned the important roles that Socialists can play in the face of today’s challenges, stressing in this respect the importance for progressive political forces to work for a societal vision that is inclusive and tolerant of diversity.
“Unfortunately, reactionary discourse is increasingly present in our societies, and it is therefore very important to develop strategies that transcend national borders and promote fraternal ties between governments and parties,” said Sanchez, who is chairing the International Socialist Congress in his capacity as leader of the PSOE.
Touching on Morocco’s relations with the EU, the President of the Spanish Government said that his country remains a gateway for the Kingdom as a strategic partner to the European political project, adding that Madrid “has always supported a strategic partnership between Rabat and Bruxelles, because it is beneficial for both parties.”
