Mauritania committed to enhancing historic relations with Morocco – National Assembly Speaker

Speaker of Mauritania’s National Assembly Mohamed Bemba Meguet asserted that his country attaches top priority to promoting historic and brotherly relations with Morocco in various fields.

During talks with Morocco’s Upper House Speaker, Mohamed Ould Errachid, in Rabat on Monday, Meguet stressed that Mauritania, State and people, attaches “paramount importance” to strengthening economic, cultural and political ties between the two countries, the Upper House said in a press release.

The Speaker of the Mauritanian National Assembly, currently on an official visit to the Kingdom at the head of a large parliamentary delegation, also praised the evolving cooperation between the two legislative institutions and called for activating the Morocco-Mauritania Parliamentary Forum to meet the two peoples’ aspirations and further strengthen bilateral ties.

For his part, Ould Errachid underlined the deep historical ties between Morocco and Mauritania, rooted in shared cultural, religious, and linguistic traditions, as well as geographic proximity.

He lauded the progress achieved in recent years under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, which has further solidified their partnership.
Ould Errachid also praised the advanced legal framework governing bilateral relations, and called for expanding joint investments and building multi-sectoral partnerships, particularly in renewable energy, maritime fisheries, infrastructure, and training.

Ould Errachid also spoke of the challenges facing the African continent, particularly the Sahel-Saharan region, beset by terrorism, organized crime and human trafficking, and called for greater coordination between the countries concerned.

Ould Errachid, who praised the joint efforts made by the two brotherly countries to develop Africa and preserve its security and stability, mentioned the Royal Atlantic Initiative and the move to facilitate Sahel countries’ access to the Atlantic Ocean.

In this connection, he confirmed Mauritania’s pivotal role in this initiative, as well as in other regional integration projects aiming to stabilize the entire region, such as the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline.
