Morocco to expand scope of energy regulator ANRE

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has appointed Zouhair Chourfi to undertake the expansion of Moroccan electricity regulator ANRE to incorporate all fields of energy.

The goal is to transform ANRE into a national energy regulator that will cover natural gas, renewable energy, and hydrogen.

The new institution will be designed to serve as an independent regulator to keep pace with the rapid development and diversification of the energy field in Morocco.

Morocco is on course to exceed 52% renewable energy in its installed capacity. By 2023, renewable energy capacity grew to 41%.

The country is also reinforcing its gas infrastructure with the setting up of LNG terminals in the Nador West Med, while tapping into existing infrastructure such as a gas pipeline that serves to import LNG from Spain.

The North African Kingdom has also received bids under its green hydrogen offer, which is tailored to use available renewable energy resources as well as sea water.
