UN/Sahara: Washington and Paris reject Algeria’s proposal to extend MINURSO mission to human rights monitoring
The lunatic Algerian regime has suffered another diplomatic setback at the UN Security Council after the United States and France ditched a proposal submitted by its delegate to UN for extending MINURSO mandate to include human rights monitoring.
Algeria uses constantly its non-permanent seat at UN Security Council to undermine Morocco’s territorial integrity, derailing UN debates and unveiling its advocacy for separatism threatening regional peace and stability.
According to diplomatic sources, the Algerian Ambassador to the UN made the proposal after Washington, the penholder on the Sahara, circulated a draft resolution for the renewal of the MINURSO mandate to expire Oct.31.
Sensing his country’s defeat over the Sahara issue at the Security Council, the permanent representative of Algeria to UN also proposed the removal of the name of his country from the upcoming resolution.
But all proposed Algerian amendments were thrown away by Paris and Washington, two permanent Security Council members with veto power, forcing the Algerian authorities to swallow their defeat with humiliation as Russia and China kept their distance and ignored the Algerian move.
This is another “big blow” and slap on the face of the Algerian regime which has trumpeted unprecedented diplomatic achievement after getting a non-permanent seat at the Security Council which is composed of 15 members: Five permanent members (USA, UK, France, China, Russia) and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.
This year, Algeria, which is sitting at the Security Council, finds itself in an extremely uncomfortable position as everybody knows that it is the main stakeholder in the Sahara issue, fueling a proxy conflict against neighboring Morocco and obstructing the UN-led process engaged for a lasting resolution of this regional conflict.
