Libya: Elections for 60 Municipal Councils scheduled to begin on November 16

The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) has announced that municipal council elections for “Group One” are set for Saturday, November 16, 2024. This announcement, released in an official statement, outlined the timeline for the election process.

According to HNEC, electoral campaigns for candidates will begin as soon as the final candidate list is approved and will continue until Friday, November 15, the designated “electoral silence” day, when campaigning must cease.

HNEC will release the final list of candidates and set the voting day for the municipal council elections, emphasizing the importance of compliance with Resolution No. (43) of 2023. This resolution includes regulations for presenting, promoting, and advertising electoral programs, with all campaign activities stopping 24 hours before voting begins.

The commission also urged approved monitoring organizations to prepare for election oversight and adhere to principles of neutrality and transparency in their monitoring methodology. Cooperation between state agencies, HNEC stressed, is crucial to ensuring a successful electoral process.

This election marks HNEC’s first time organizing municipal council elections at this level. The commission remains committed to holding elections for “Group Two” at the beginning of 2025.

“Group One” encompasses 58 municipal councils across various regions, including 17 in the southern region, 29 in the western region, and 12 in the eastern region, reflecting a nationwide effort to bolster local governance through this election.
