Moroccan authorities stopped 3000 from illegal migration following social media incitement

Moroccan authorities acted in full respect of legal provisions in preventing some 3000 people from an illegal migration attempt, spokesman for the government Mustapha Baitas said.

Calls by unknown parties spread on social media inciting the youth to make a mass crossing attempt to the Spanish-occupied enclave of Ceuta on September 20.

Authorities arrested 152 individuals who face justice for using social media to incite to the illegal crossing.

Local media reported that many candidates to illegal migration have been returned to their hometowns.

The migrants include many Algerians who enter Morocco without visa from airports.

So far this year, Morocco foiled 45,000 migration attempts and last year it aborted 75,000 attempts.

Spain’s foreign minister commended Morocco’s cooperation in fighting illegal migration.
