Algerian football federation shaken by corruption scandal

At least 14 members and former senior officials of the Algerian football federation are under investigation on suspected corruption charges, the Algerian prosecutor said.

The suspects include former presidents and secretary generals of the football federation, known as FAF, the prosecutor said in a statement.

“Following tips of on suspicions of corruption at the level of the FAF involving a number of senior executives in the conclusion of contracts in violation of the internal procedure to grant unjustified privileges to third parties, which led to the squandering of public funds at the level of the FAF and the Treasury, a preliminary investigation has been opened by the brigade in charge of the fight against economic and financial crimes,” the statement said.

The federation has piled up debt worth 48 million euros and has failed to ensure a good organization of the recent U17 African football championship, besides the low performance of the Algerian team continentally.
