Incumbent military ruler wins Chad’s presidential elections

Mahamat Idriss Deby, Chad interim president- who took power in 2021- won Chad’s presidential elections with 61.3% of the vote, the election committee said.

Provisional results showed his rival Prime Minister Masra, won 18.53%, in a vote that marks the first return among military-ruled Sahel states to constitutional order via the ballot box.

General Deby was named ruler by the army after his father, Idriss Déby Itno, was killed during a battle with rebel forces in April 2021.

His victory marks a continuation of the Deby’s family rule which lasted 34 years so far.

Chad has been comparatively stable in a Sahel-region beset by climate crises, underdevelopment, Jihadist activity, and infighting.
