Morocco: Drug trafficking attempts thwarted in Agadir, Tanger-Med

Authorities in Agadir have successfully intercepted this Sunday a fishing boat that was used for smuggling purposes, and seized a substantial quantity of narcotics totaling 10 metric tons and 542 kilograms of Chira, a potent form of cannabis resin.

According to statements from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) and the General Directorate of National Territory Surveillance (DGST), a joint operation involving local police, the Royal Navy, and the Royal Gendarmerie led to the apprehension of thirteen suspects allegedly involved in the illicit activity.

Following the interception of the boat and the arrest of the suspects, further investigations will be carried out to uncover the international and national networks associated with the drug trafficking ring and identify potential connections to other global criminal syndicates.

In Northern Morocco, national security forces and customs services at the Tanger-Med port foiled a drug trafficking attempt in the early hours of Saturday.

A staggering 1.2 ton of Chira were discovered on board an international goods transport truck registered in Morocco. The vigilant security operations at the port led to the detection of the substance, meticulously concealed within the metal chassis of the truck. The driver, identified as a 28-year-old Moroccan citizen, was apprehended and is currently under investigation by judicial authorities.

Also on Saturday, two individuals were apprehended in Agadir on Saturday for their suspected involvement in a criminal network operating in drug and psychotropic trafficking.

According to a security source, the suspects were intercepted at the Amskroud toll station shortly after arriving in a light vehicle from a northern city of the Kingdom. Subsequent searches led to the discovery of 72 kg of cannabis resin and 2,850 Ecstasy psychotropic pills in their possession.

Further investigation into the National Security database unveiled that one of the arrested individuals is the subject of two national search warrants issued by the judicial police services of Casablanca. These warrants are related to his alleged involvement in cases concerning the issuance of rubber cheques.

These successful operations underscore the ongoing efforts of security services to combat the scourge of international drug trafficking. Such endeavors are crucial in safeguarding communities against the harmful effects of narcotics and narcotics-related crimes.
