Spain officially reaffirms Autonomy Plan as “the most serious, realistic and credible basis” for the settlement of Sahara dispute; importance of Sahara issue for Morocco

Spain has officially reaffirmed that the Moroccan Autonomy Plan for the Sahara, presented in 2007, is “the most serious, realistic and credible basis for the resolution of this dispute” and underlined the importance of Sahara issue for Morocco.

This came in a written response by the Government to the question asked at the congress by deputy Jon Inarritu of the Basque party EH BILDU on the official position of the Spanish government concerning the Sahara issue.

In its written response, focusing on four essential points, the Spanish Government underlined that Spain’s position is fully consistent with international legality as reported by the Head of Government during the UN General Assembly in September 2023 which was based on the provisions of point 1 of the (Spanish-Moroccan) Joint Declaration of April 2022 and point 8 of the Joint Declaration of February 2023 which affirm that “Spain recognizes the importance of the Sahara question for Morocco as well as the serious and credible efforts made by Morocco within the framework of the United Nations to find a mutually acceptable solution. As such, Spain considers the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented in 2007, as the most serious, realistic, and credible basis for the resolution of this dispute.”

The Government’s answer also affirmed that Spain is in favor of a mutually acceptable solution within the framework of the Charter of the United Nations and the resolutions of the Security Council; and that it unconditionally supports the efforts of the personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for the Sahara.

It added that Spain will always support the Sahrawi population in the Tindouf camps and will forever remain the leading donor of humanitarian aid on the European and international level.

This response of the Spanish executive concerning the Sahara issue triggered the anger and indignation of the Polisario separatists and their Spanish relays.
