FAO Regional Conference for Africa to convene in Morocco next Spring

The 33rd session of the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Regional Conference for Africa will convene in Morocco next Spring.

The FAO Regional Conference will be held in two parts: a virtual session for senior officials on March 27-29, which will address the technical aspects of food security and the transformation of agrifood systems in Africa, and a ministerial session from April 18 to 20 in Rabat.

The conference will bring together FAO members from the African region, specialized agencies of the United Nations system, as well as intergovernmental and civil society organizations. Linguistic diversity will be taken into account, with proceedings taking place in English, Arabic, French and Portuguese.

The event will be attended by Ministers of Agriculture and Ministers of other key portfolios linked to the transformation of food systems, covering areas such as finance, trade and industry, forestry, fisheries, environment, science and technology, and health.

The Conference will be held in Morocco under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on Wednesday in Rabat between the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The MoU, initialed by Agriculture Minister, Mohammed Sadiki, and the FAO representative, Jean Senahoun, defines the terms of partnership between the two parties and establishes the measures necessary for the success of the 33rd session of the Regional Conference, which will focus on the theme: “Resilient agrifood systems and inclusive rural transformation.”

Speaking on the occasion, Sadiki said that the signing of this memorandum reinforces the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive agrifood systems in Africa. “We look forward to welcoming the regional community to share our experiences, explore innovative solutions and strong partnerships for more efficient and resilient agrifood systems,” he added.

For his part, Senahoun commended Morocco’s commitment to food security and sustainable development, saying that the 33rd session of the FAO Regional Conference for Africa would be a crucial platform for discussing the current and future challenges facing agriculture in Africa.
