Vladimir Putin to hold talks with Chad’s leader this January 24

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will hold this January 24 talks with his Chadian counterpart Mahamat Idriss Deby who embarked Tuesday on an official visit to Moscow.
Vladimir Putin’s office said on X that talks will focus on the prospects for the development of Russia-Chad relations in various areas, as well as issues on the regional and international agenda.

The visit further confirms Russia’s growing presence in the Sahara region of the African continent where western influence is dwindling after Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger scaled down ties with former colonial power France.

Chad is a traditional partner to France. Paris has for long supported the regime of Mahamat Deby’s father ruled in the central African country for decades until his death in April 2021.
The incumbent Chadian leader first came to power following his father’s death but later was sworn in as Transitional leader in October 2022.

Chad is scheduled to hold presidential elections before October this year 2024.
