Sahara: Budapest reaffirms support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan

The Government of Budapest has reaffirmed its unwavering backing to the realistic autonomy plan offered by Morocco for the Sahara under its sovereignty for a lasting and peaceful resolution of this regional dispute.

The supportive stand was expressed by Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Szijjártó at a press conference held in Rabat following his talks with Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.

“The Autonomy Plan proposed by Morocco offers a way out of this conflict in line with UN Security Council resolutions,” said the Hungarian top diplomat, noting that his country attaches great importance to the respect of territorial integrity and sovereignty of States.

Hungary defends the Moroccan autonomy plan in international fora, added Mr. Szijjártó, citing in this regard his country’s stand voiced during the Appeal to the EU Court of Justice on this issue.

The Hungarian official also highlighted Morocco’s role as a responsible player and as a key partner of Hungary for peace and stability in the region and in Africa.

He likewise insisted on the Kingdom’s responsible policy in the fight against irregular migration and its efforts to combat irregular migratory flows, and emphasized its clear and firm stance against terrorism, which is one of the reasons for illegal migration.

Pointing out that stability and peace in Africa depend on peace and security in Europe, the Hungarian minister stressed the importance of Morocco as a key partner of the European Union in these areas.
