Nollywood: Nigeria’s ambitious $100m film city project launched in Lagos
Lagos State Governor on Wednesday (18 October) initiated the commencement of an ambitious $100 million Lagos Film City project, which aspires to transform the landscape of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Film City, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the proposed project would amplify the voices of the country’s diverse communities and showcase the industry on a global scale. “This Film City will be a testament to our commitment to nurturing the arts and supporting the dreams of aspiring filmmakers, actors, and technicians,” he said. The Film City, which is expected to be the biggest in Africa, would enhance the economic growth and cultural development of Lagos State. The project is based around a private-public partnership, aspiring to create a thriving and vibrant hub for various aspects of the film industry that would captivate audiences worldwide.
The ambitious project will encompass film production, visual effects, scripting, cinematography, editing, photography, and all the ancillary services that are very valuable to the filmmaking process. With a primary focus on enhancing the quality and scale of Nigeria’s film and entertainment output, this initiative, the Lagos Film City is set to bolster the local film ecosystem, enabling it to compete on a global scale. The Founder of Del-York Group, Linus Idahosa, who conceived the idea three years ago, stated that the collaboration between the Lagos Film City and the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture — and notably the anticipated influx of international visitors — is expected to generate substantial economic impact.
