Gabon: General Brice Oligui Nguema named transitional President
A Military junta in Gabon branding itself as Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) named Wednesday August 30 Gen. Oligui Nguema Brice as the leader of the transition in the central African country after toppling incumbent leader Ali Omar Bongo, few days after general elections.
Some soldiers presenting the CTRI made the announcement Wednesday on state-run television “Gabon 24”, a few hours after deposing Ali Bongo who has been in power since 2009.
Nguema before Wednesday’s announcement was the commander-in-chief of the Gabonese Republican Guard. Tensions have been high in the country for months in the buildup to the elections with the opposition blaming the regime for rigging the election.
The CTRI also announced the suspension of all public institutions and maintained a curfew earlier imposed by Bongo few hours after the elections, to maintain peace. The soldiers accused Bongo for “irresponsible, unpredictable governance” leading to a deteriorating social climate.
