Norwegian Scatec to build 5 gigawatts wind power plant in Egypt

Norwegian renewable power producer Scatec ASA will build a 5 gigawatts wind power plant in the Egyptian city of Sohag, near the Nile, following a $5 billion deal signed with the Egyptian ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.
In line with the deal, the two sides signed Wednesday an agreement for Egypt’s New and Renewable Energy Development and Use Authority inked a deal to provide a plot of land dedicated to the creation of a wind power plant.
The Egyptian Government in a statement indicated that the wind power plant to be built in western Sohag will produce 5 gigawatts of electricity per year, and the project contributes to Egypt’s goal of making up 42% of the country’s energy mix by 2030.
The station to be built in the western Sohag region is expected to be one of the largest wind turbines in Egypt and Africa, and will contribute to achieving the Egyptian government’s goals of doubling the ratio of renewable energies in the mix of energy. The construction and management of the plant will generate 8,000 jobs including 300 permanent ones.
