Morocco receives 5.1 million tourists up to May

Morocco’s tourism sector is showing strong recovery with 5.1 million arrivals in the first five months this year, auguring well for the country’s inflow of hard currency.

Arrivals until May are in fact 20% higher than the same period in 2019, the reference pre-covid year.

Arrivals in May alone were 55% higher with 1.1 million tourists visiting Morocco and leading analysts to put forward expectations of a record year in terms of arrivals and revenues.

Tourism revenue stood at 3.21 billion dollars up to April, that is 40% up compared to the same period in 2019, according to tourism ministry data.

The ministry noted a significant increase in arrivals from Spain, the UK, Israel, and Italy in particular.

Morocco announced a road map worth 6.1 billion Dirhams (590 million dollars) to attract 17.5 million tourists and 12 billion dollars in tourism receipts by 2026.

The sector has turned the page on the pandemic with arrivals increasing to 11 million in 2022, that is a recovery rate of 84% compared with 2019.
