China donates 1,042 tons of rice to Cape Verde

A total of 1,042 tons of rice donated by China will be distributed free of charge to social and health institutions, arriving this month, to mitigate the effects of the price escalation, according to a resolution approved by the Council of Ministers.
“Taking into account the situation experienced by many families, the aforementioned food aid should be distributed free of charge to public and civil society organizations of a social nature, nursing homes, hospitals and health centers in the country,” reads the same resolution, which “determines the free distribution” of this donation.
“Cape Verde continues to face the effects of the war in Ukraine and the inflationary crisis, impacting negatively on the agro-food system, especially the prices of basic food products (PAPN). Thanks to measures to strengthen the resilience of the food system implemented by the Government and with support from development partners, the food insecurity situation has not worsened”, the resolution further states.
It adds that data from the latest Harmonized Framework analysis, March 2023, “showed that due to the conjuncture characterized by rising food prices and increased cost of living, 17% of people are in phase 2 (under-pressure), 8% in the food crisis phase (phase 3) and 1% are in a food emergency (phase 4).”
