Return of Syria to Arab league should lead to lasting solution – Morocco says
Arab foreign ministers have decided, on Sunday in Cairo, to allow Syria to retake its seat at the Arab League after its membership was suspended following the violent crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.
The decision was made after several months of deliberations before agreeing on Syria’s readmission under some conditions. The move comes within the geostrategic changes triggered by the China-brokered agreement between Riyadh and Teheran, the war in Ukraine, rapprochement between Turkey and Egypt…
Moroccan foreign minister Nasser, who took part in the Arab League emergency meeting on Syria, said the decision should lead to political process resulting in a comprehensive and lasting resolution to the crisis in this country.
He voiced Morocco’s support to the efforts made in this regard by Saudi Arabia, saying the Arab league move will make the upcoming Arab summit scheduled in Jeddah a real opportunity for the reunification of Arab ranks.
Bourita recalled the historical ties between Morocco and Syria and affirmed that King Mohammed VI follows closely the Syria crisis and its impacts on countries of the region.
He urged the Arab League to go beyond readmission of Syria, using its leverage for peace & security in a bid to become one of the faithful partners of Syria for development and prosperity.
For the minister, the Arab league, which is committed to the principle of preserving Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, the cohesion of its society ( …), should be engaged in addressing other urgent issues for the Syrians themselves and other countries, such as the safe return of refugees, delivery of humanitarian and medical aid, Syrian national reconciliation and the fight against terrorism.
This makes the Arab move in line with the efforts of the UN Special Envoy to Syria to achieve a breakthrough in this crisis with the help of the Syrians themselves, while taking into account the interest of the Syrian people, underlined Mr. Bourita.
Washington has said it will not normalize relations with the Assad regime until there is authentic, UN-facilitated political progress in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254, “the only viable solution to ending the war”.
