Nigeria’s NNPC, Norway’s Golar ink MoU to build floating LNG plant

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd, Africa’s biggest oil producer, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Norwegian company to build a floating LNG plant in the West African country to boost its domestic supplies and exports.

Nigeria’s state oil giant has inked the MoU with Golar Liquefied Natural Gas Energy (GLNG) in Abuja, the NNPC said on Twitter last week, as it seeks investment to tap into what are some of the world’s biggest gas reserves that the company holds. The West African country possesses important natural gas reserves that it does not have the capital to exploit. Golar has in the past indicated plans to set up a power project in Nigeria that could use one of its vessels to import LNG.

Golar LNG is one of the world’s largest independent owners and operators of marine-based LNG midstream infrastructure that is “active in the liquefaction, transportation, and regasification of natural gas,” the NNPC said. The Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project — Nigeria’s biggest of its kind — is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2023. According to the NNPC, the AKK is a flagship project aimed at deepening the integration of Nigeria’s northern region with the Niger Delta and other parts of the country.
