Eid Al Fitr: Morocco’s King pardons nearly 1,520 iInmates

King Mohammed VI has pardoned 1,518 convicts on the eve of Eid Al Fitr celebrated on April 22 in the North African Kingdom after a month of fasting, reflection, charity, and generosity.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Justice says the beneficiaries of the royal pardon include inmates who were granted a pardon over their remaining jail terms, convicts who had their prison terms reduced and one prisoner who saw his sentence commuted from life imprisonment to fixed jail term.

Some inmates benefited from the royal pardon over their prison sentences or remaining prison terms. Others benefited from a pardon over their imprisonment terms but their fines were maintained.

Some prisoners saw their fines canceled, while others benefited from both a pardon over their prison terms and fines.

Among the beneficiaries of the Royal pardon, there are 17 inmates convicted in extremism and terrorism cases. These prisoners benefited from Royal clemency after they renounced all forms of extremism & terrorism, and voiced attachment to the sacred values of the Nation and national institutions.

Five of these convicts benefited from royal pardon over the remaining prison terms, 5 had their sentences reduced and their fines annulled, 6 inmates had their prison terms shortened and one person had his fine cancelled.

The Moroccan Monarch usually grants pardons to inmates and convicts on religious and national celebrations. On this joyous occasion of Eid Al Fitr, the King also extended his warmest greetings to all Muslim leaders and people.
