Algerian president launches new wave of fake news on Al Jazeera

In a newly aired interview by Al Jazeera, Algerian President Abdelmedjid Tebboune continues to entertain as he unleashed a new series of lies about the economy of his country.

At North Africa Post, we had the habit of describing Tebboune as a member of the music band that was playing while the ship was sinking. The comparison is all the more relevant in this context where Algerians struggle to find onions and where the price of meat has more than doubled while most basic foodstuff are either out of reach of most Algerians or lacking in supermarkets. Meanwhile, queues for milk and cooking oil are getting longer as the two products have been rationed long ago.

Myopic to all these facts, President Tebboune spoke to Aljazeera about an imaginary Algeria which- he said- managed to achieve self-sufficiency with a strong potential to export to Europe.

He said agricultural output stood at 34 billion dollars, a figure that is nowhere to be found in data released by the national statistics agency, which mentions a strong dependence on imports of foodstuff.

Tebboune also said that Algerians are now comparing their living standards to Europe! Little did he know that the minimum salary in Algeria was 134 euros or even less in a country where the currency has been devalued reflecting the weak oil and gas dependent economy.

He doubled on his lie saying Algeria retrieved 22 billion dollars of stolen money adding to the 36 billion dollars that he previously said was confiscated from a family, drawing mockery to himself as an ill-advised president.

Lacking tangible achievements, Tebboune is in a delicate situation to explain the high inflation, poverty and higher unemployment despite a spectacular surge in oil & gas prices and revenue. His media appearances are only confirming the fact that he has nothing but rhetoric and lies to offer. As the clock ticks, oil and gas prices are doomed to drop leaving Algeria once again facing the real threat of economic collapse.
