Renewable energies to account for 43% of Morocco’s installed capacity

Morocco is set to bolster the share of renewable energy in its installed capacity to 43% by the end of the year, from 41% currently with a view to increasing its consumption of renewable energies to 52% of the global total by 2030, said head of Morocco’s water and electricity utility Abderrahim El Hafidi.

Speaking at the recently held National Industry Day, El Hafidi noted that 20% of Morocco’s electricity goes to industry hence the need to further push the decarbonization agenda by investing in renewables.

This is particularly important as the EU- Morocco’s largest trading partner- braces for a carbon tax that would privilege industries transitioning to renewable energies.

With steady efforts, Morocco will be able to increase that rate to 64% by 2030 to reduce Morocco’s dependence on fossil fuel imports, he said.
