African Union confirms UN exclusive role in Sahara issue

The latest Summit of the African Union, held in Addis Ababa 18-19 Feb., has not addressed or made any reference to the Sahara issue, respecting the UN exclusive role in handling this regional dispute.

The summiteers have thus honored their political commitment and respected the resolution passed unanimously during the 2018 AU summit convened in Nouakchott.

The agenda of the Addis Ababa summit focused on AU institutional reforms, peace & security in Africa, food crisis, climate change, response to Covid-19, African free trade zone and global political, financial and energy situation.

Head of Govt. Aziz Akhnnouch, represented King Mohammed VI in the summit. Akhannouch, accompanied by a large delegation including FM Nasser Bourita, also represented the Monarch in the 2nd Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Climate Commission for the Sahel Region (CCSR), held in Addis Ababa on the sidelines of the AU summit.

King Mohammed VI addressed the Conference a message read by Akhannouch. In this message, the Moroccan Sovereign renewed commitment to continue providing the Climate Commission for the Sahel region the necessary technical assistance and support its actions to enable it complete its roadmap for an Africa more resilient to climate change.

For his part, Nasser Bourita took part in the AU Executive Council’s meeting on the implementation of Agenda 2063. He reaffirmed, on this occasion, Morocco’s strong commitment to Africa and vowed to strengthen further cooperation ties with African countries to enable them build up a dynamic, democratic and sustainable Africa.

The Executive Council of the African Union supported Morocco’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for the period 2028-2029. The AU Executive body also approved Morocco’s bids to serve on the Council of International Maritime Organization for the period 2024-2025 and the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers.

The Council refused to adopt a hostile move proposed by Algeria and its puppets in a bid to ensure a wider participation in all partnership summits of African Union.
