UNWTO picks two Moroccan villages among best tourism villages in the world
Two Moroccan villages, Ksar Elkhorbat and Moulay Bouzerktoune, have been chosen lately by the World Tourism Organization among the best tourism villages in the world in 2022.
Ksar Elkhorbat is a fortified village located in the province of Errachidia, while Moulay Bouzerktoune is a fishing village situated in the province of Essaouira.
They have been named this year among the best 32 ecotourism villages from 18 countries out of 136 applications vying for the award which recognizes rural destinations that are embracing tourism as a driver of development and new opportunities for jobs and income.
The trophy also rewards villages for their commitment to innovation and sustainability in all its aspects (economic, social & environmental) and a focus on developing tourism in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, “the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO showcase the power of the sector to drive economic diversification and create opportunities for all outside of big cities”.
The Best Tourism Villages awards of the UNWTO seek to make eco-tourism as a driver of rural development and inclusion. It also contributes to reducing regional inequalities and poverty. It promotes sustainable development, encourages efficient use of resources and environment protection.
