Morocco’s King urges Gvt, stakeholders to accelerate development of renewable energies, green hydrogen

King Mohammed VI has urged the Government and all stakeholders to speed up the development of renewable energies, especially solar and wind energy, as well as green hydrogen and to endeavor to attract more domestic and foreign investment in the sector.

Building on its progress, Morocco should accelerate the deployment of renewable energy in order to strengthen its energy sovereignty, reduce energy costs and position itself in the decarbonized economy in the decades to come, said the King while he was chairing in Rabat Tuesday a working meeting devoted to the development of renewable energy and new prospects in this field, said the Royal Office in a statement.

This working meeting is part of the regular monitoring by the Sovereign of the strategic objectives that the Kingdom has set in terms of large-scale development of renewable energy, including that of increasing the share of these energies to more than 52% of the national electricity mix by 2030.

A presentation made during the meeting surveyed the progress of the renewable energy development program that has enabled Morocco to assert its regional and global leadership in this major sector of energy transition.

The King has thus given his high directives to accelerate the development and deployment of renewable energies, especially solar and wind energy, and to build on the progress scored in order to strengthen the Kingdom’s energy sovereignty, reduce energy costs and position itself in the decarbonized economy in the decades to come.

This includes activating the implementation of projects under development, as well as enhancing the competitive advantage of Morocco to attract more domestic and foreign investment in the sector, the statement of the Royal office said, adding that the Sovereign has urged for accelerating the completion of the three solar energy projects Noor Midelt.

In addition, the increasing competitiveness of renewable energies is opening up promising new prospects for the Kingdom, particularly in the fields of seawater desalination and the emerging field of green hydrogen and its uses.

In order to place Morocco in the club of countries with high potential in this sector of the future, and to respond to the multiple projects led by investors and world leaders, the Sovereign has given his high instructions to develop, as soon as possible, an operational and enticing “Morocco Offer”, covering the entire value chain of the green hydrogen sector in Morocco. It should include, in addition to the regulatory and institutional framework, the necessary infrastructure scheme.
