Morocco ranks 4th globally on Climate Change Performance Index
Morocco has ranked 4th globally on Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) which looks at four categories namely GHG Emissions, Renewable Energy, Energy Use and Climate Policy, knowing that the first three overall spots remained empty because no country performed well enough in all index categories to achieve an overall very high rating.
The index, established by the German environmental and development NGO Germanwatch, the international climate action network and the German “New Climate Institute”, evaluates and compares the climate protection performance of 63 countries and the European Union (EU) (status CCPI 2022), which are together responsible for more than 90% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
According to the index, Morocco, though it maintains a positive trend in renewable energy, it should improve in the other indicators as well.
“Despite this positive development, the CCPI experts note that Morocco lacks the will to decentralize renewable energy and encourage citizens to produce their own renewable energy,” the index adds.
The North African country is reckoned for plans to plant 600,000 hectares of forest by 2030. It is also lauded for establishing a framework to reduce emissions and adhere to the Paris accords.
The experts welcome the positive changes the new government has undertaken to further improve the country’s climate performance. Yet, they note that the global COVID-19 pandemic, water stress, and the geopolitical and economic crisis induced by the Russia-Ukraine war are brakes on ambitions.
“Morocco owes this position (…) to its alignment with the trajectory of global warming of less than 1.5°C, in accordance with the Paris climate agreement as well as the efforts made within the framework of its energy strategy for the development of renewable and clean energies,” commented Ministry of Energy Transition in a press release.
With the first three spots not filled, Denmark and Sweden are ranked respectively 4th and 5th. Chili is ranked 6th, Morocco 7th, India 8th, Estonia 9th and Norway 10th.
