Algeria runs against global counterterrorism efforts

Algeria, the country from which terrorism sprouted to plague the whole Sahel and beyond, has issued a statement opposing a ministerial meeting in Marrakech of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. The reason was that the closing statement warned of the dangers of the collusion between separatists- which Algeria supports- and terrorist groups.

In a statement by its isolated foreign ministry, Algeria said it rejects the closing statement and blamed Morocco for practicing its right of protecting and gathering support for its territorial integrity and its autonomy plan as a lasting political solution to the Sahara issue.

During the Marrakech anti-terrorism summit, multiple countries expressed support for Morocco’s position over the Algeria-fueled Sahara conflict. These include, the Netherlands, Turkey and Egypt.

The focus of the meeting was on the connivance between separatist groups and terrorist organizations, especially in the Sahel region where many of the disenchanted youth in the Polisario-run Tindouf camps are joining terrorist and extremist groups.

Instead of backing the global momentum against terrorism, Algeria is ready to manipulate terrorism to serve its separatist schemes and undermine Morocco and other neighboring states in the Sahel.

Algeria which failed to eradicate terrorist groups on its soils has rather exported the scourge of terror to Libya and the Sahel where many former terrorist fighters in the Algerian black decade are now commanding terrorist fighters in Mali.
