Over 34 million passengers used Moroccan trains in 2021

Moroccan train operator ONCF regained normal traffic with 34.5 million passengers using its trains in 2021, up 64% compared to a year earlier marked by Covid-19 lockdown and travel restrictions.

The state-owned company’s revenue stood at 3.5 billion dirhams the same year, compared with 2.8 billion in 2020, ONCF chief told the board of directors.

Africa’s fastest high-speed train, Al Boraq, carried 2.4 million passengers between Casablanca and Tangier the same year. It transported only 1.3 million people in 2020.

ONCF chief said that as of 2022, all high speed trains will run on energy generated from wind parks, adding that all other trains will use clean energy gradually.

Moroccan trains are also key to transporting goods such as phosphates and car exports. In 2021, Moroccan trains carried 25.5 million tons, up 2.6% from a year earlier.
