Sahara: UN Security Council extends for another year MINURSO mandate

The UN Security Council decided on Friday to extend the MINURSO mandate for another year, until 31 October 2022, reaffirming the pre-eminence of the Moroccan autonomy initiative for a lasting & peaceful resolution of the Sahara regional conflict.

The resolution passed by the Council welcomed once again the “serious and credible” efforts made by Morocco for the settlement of the Sahara issue through its autonomy plan offered under its sovereignty, a plan supported by the international community.

During the UN fourth Committee debates on the Sahara, Representatives of several Arab, African, Asian, Latin America and Caribbean countries have voiced firm support to Morocco’s territorial integrity and autonomy plan describing it as “a constructive” and “practical” initiative offering a viable solution to the Sahara issue.

They also welcomed the appointment of a new UN envoy for the Sahara and expressed support to the UN efforts, including the roundtable meetings held in Geneva on the Sahara in 2018 and 2019 with the participation of all parties to the conflict, namely Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the polisario.
