Libya: HoR grants confidence to PM Dbeibah’s GNU

Libyan PM Abdel Hamid Dbeibah’s Government of National Unity (GNU) was granted confidence by the House of Representatives (HoR) in its reunified and quorate session in Sirte this Wednesday.

The GNU received 132 votes in favor, two abstentions – while 36 members did not turn up to Sirte at all, reports the Libya Herald.

HoR Speaker Ageela Saleh told the Prime Minister that his government’s term ends on 24 December 2021, the date of the planned elections. If it has to continue on in government, it will do so as a caretaker government.

In his acceptance speech, Dbeibah said he still needs the support and votes of the HoR to pass the full 2021 budget, the constitution referendum law, and the local government law, the Libya Herald added.

He said he needed the HoR with him in all stages and pleaded with the HoR to meet anywhere in Libya.

He said he will give his support to the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) to organize the 24 December elections on a constitutional basis and on the planned date, underlining that he was against centralization and for effective local government.

He also vowed that during his term, war in Libya will not happen again. Libyans must not fight each other again, he stressed.

The successful quorate adoption of the GNU by the HoR puts an end to the Faiez Serraj-led Presidency Council and Government of National Accord (GNA) brought to power by the Skhirat Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) of 2015.
