Human rights activists are not above the law- Moroccan government says

Morocco has been attacked by several international rights organizations demanding the release of a historian and rights activist who is in custody on money laundering charges.

The government’s human rights inter-ministerial delegation reacted to the blatant interference in the independence of the Moroccan judiciary by organizations such as Amnesty by saying that human rights activists are not above the law.

It recalled that Maati Mounjib was not arrested because of his activism or ideas but rather due to his suspected involvement in money laundering and that the Moroccan courts alone have the right to acquit or indict him.

Several rights NGOs have called for the release of Mounjib but for the Moroccan government such calls represent an attempt to influence the course of justice and an interference in the judiciary, the inter-ministerial delegation said.
