Sudan: Ibrahim Yassin replaces late Gamal Omer as Defense Minister

Sudan’s Sovereign Council on Wednesday appointed former Maj Gen. Ibrahim Yassin for the position of Defense Minister in replacement to Gamal Omer who died in Juba in March.

The council confirmed the nomination of the former Joint Command and Staff College in Khartoum after he was proposed by the military component of the council.

Under the transitional constitution, the defense and interior ministers are nominated by the military component and appointed by the Prime Minister, Sudan Tribune recalls.

Omer, 59, died of headache in South Sudan as he was attending peace talks with rebels opposed to Khartoum.

The late Defense Minister was a member of the Transitional Military Council (TMC) that ousted longtime ruler Omar Bashir, in a military coup, in April last year.
