Morocco’s coronavirus mortality rate drops to below 3%

Morocco has lowered considerably the coronavirus mortality rate to 2.9% one of the world’s lowest, head of anti-pandemic department Mohamed El Youbi said.

He also noted a rise in recoveries thanks to the adoption of a chloroquine-based treatment to 2991, but deplored that the rise in hot spots kept cases increasing to 6418. Deaths stood at 188.

El Youbi however warned that the average age of infected people dropped to 34.5 years, pointing out that some young people seem to underestimate the health emergency measures and cause contagion within their families.

Most new infections have been reported amid contact cases in the hardest hit regions of Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangier, Fez and Rabat.

So far, Morocco has tested 71.815 people and plans to increase tests in order to better control the pandemic.

Tunisia was the best performing country in the Maghreb reporting zero new infection for the second day in a row. Total cases stood at 1.032 including 45 deaths and 727 recoveries while Algeria has conducted 6500 tests only and has the regions highest mortality rate with 515 deaths amid 6067 infections.
